Spring Break at NYBG

Today was a beautiful day to enjoy the beginning of spring at NYBG with my friend Jane and her daughter "S".  It was sunny and the air was crisp and breezy--perfect for a nice, leisurely stroll outdoors.
love "S" smelling the tulips!

This week at the Botanical Gardens there are several activities for the kids to help welcome spring.  Kids can plant in the family garden, make terrariums to take home and go on a scavenger hunt.  At the end of the week there is a concert featuring Ferdinand the Bull.

Today in the Discovery Center, our kids made a field journal and a terrarium.  Putting the terrarium together was simple enough even for my 2-year old.  The kids put in some rocks, a few scoops of soil, picked out 2 plants (a "polka-dot" plant and a begonia) and then watered it themselves.  What a simple but fun and educational activity for the kids to learn about tropical rainforests.  And, they'll be able to maintain it and watch it grow at home.

After a quick at the Cafe (thanks Jane for treating the family!), we checked out the Orchid Show in the Conservatory.  The flower displays were beautiful but I think the kids had more fun just watching the fish and ducks in the outdoor reflecting pool.
What a great start to L's spring break!
