Apple Recipe #2: Caramel Apples

Step 1:  Peel caramels.  (I used a 14 oz package of Kraft caramels)  This was the perfect activity for my toddler son who had a blast peeling all the caramels and it gave me 20 solid minutes to feed and diaper my infant!

Step 2: Combine caramels and 1 T. water in microwave safe bowl.  Microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring in between.

Step 3: Swirl skewered apples in the caramel, using a spoon to coat as necessary.  (I used skewers specifically for caramel apples.  They have a pointed end that makes it easy to push into the apple, but you can also use craft sticks)

Step 4: Allow caramel to firm up.

 Step 5: Enjoy!

Step 6: Brush your teeth thoroughly!  That caramel gets in every nook and cranny : )

Warning!!!  Melted caramel is extremely hot, don't touch it directly.

Tip 1: To clean the caramel coated bowl, add water and microwave on high for 2-3 minutes.  Use a spoon to loosen the melted caramel from the bowl.  Wash in warm water.

Tip 2: You can also add sprinkles, nuts, chocolate chips etc. to the caramel apples while the caramel is still warm.
The caramel hardened before we could get the sprinkles on : )
Tip 3: The more melted the caramel and hotter it is, the thinner the coat of caramel will be.

Tip 4: To keep the caramel warm, you can keep it over a simmering water bath.  Otherwise, just microwave it as necessary.
